NHL Tape Jobs
Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like Auston Matthews
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as one of the best NHL goal-scorers, Auston Matthews.
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. The hockey stick we use in the video is the CCM Jetspeed with the P29 curve.
The second thing we need is some 1-and-a-half-inch white hockey cloth tape. In the video, we went with the Renfrow brand as I have found that it does not leave that annoying residue that some other cloth tapes leave on the stick blade.
The last thing we need is a pair of scissors to trim up the tape or to use to cut the tape if desired.
Before you put this together, here are the key components of his tape job:
Start by going toe to heel, rather than heel to toe, where heel to toe tends to be the standard across the hockey world.
Use 1 and a half inch white hockey tape and tape almost the entire blade.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like Auston Matthews
Starting on the backhand side near the toe, we will begin at the top of the blade and wrap the tape straight down the forehand side of the toe, nearly flush with the edge of the toe, but not quite. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completely covering the starting point.
Going back to the front, bring the tape down at an angle to begin taping toward the heel. Naturally, with the P29 curve, you will need to press down some of the excess tape near the toe to be cut later.
As you make your way to the heel, the overlap of the tape should be minimal. Continue to do this until you get to the heel. Matthews likes to tape nearly the entire blade, so tape all the way to the beginning of the heel of the blade.
When the blade is on the last pass on the backhand, make sure to pull the tape back across to align with the top of the last pass or a bit before the last pass on the backhand. Then rip or cut the tape directly on top.
Going back to the toe, if there is any tape that is hanging off the toe area, take your scissors and trim that bit off.
And that is it! Now that you have the Auston Matthews tape job on your paddle, go score some goals!
