NHL Tape Jobs
Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like Connor Bedard
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as the 2023 1st Overall pick of the NHL Draft, Connor Bedard!
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. This hockey stick we will be using is the CCM Jetspeed with the P29 or otherwise known as the P92 curve.
Second, we need is some 1 inch white hockey cloth tape.
The third thing we need are a pair of scissors to trim up the tape or to use to cut the tape if desired.
Lastly, we need a puck to mark up the tape.
Key Components of Connor Bedard's Tape Job:
First, he starts by going toe to heel, rather than heel to toe, where heel to toe tends to be the standard across the hockey world.
Second, he uses 1-inch white hockey tape and tapes nearly the entire blade, leaving a bit of the toe exposed.
Third, is that he uses a puck to mark up the tape with different designs.
The fourth and final component is that his tape job changes often and that he admits that he is not the best at taping a hockey stick, so his lines are not always straight and the way he tapes it changes from time to time. In this video, we are going to tape the stick like his sock method that we have seen, but note that he has also taped his stick like Alexander Ovechkin as well with the half sock.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like Connor Bedard
Starting on the backhand side of the toe, we will begin with a bit of an overlap and wrap the tape straight down on the toe, nearly flush with the edge, but not quite. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completly covering the starting point.
Going back to the front, bring the tape down at an angle to begin taping towards the heel. The overlap of the tape does not have to be perfect, as Bedard’s tape job tends to be erratic with the lines. Continue to do this until you get beyond the heel, nearly to the shaft of the stick, now it is time to rip or cut the tape.
Going back to the toe, if there is any tape that is hanging off the toe area, take your scissors and trim that bit off. Now the taping portion is complete.
The final step is to mark up the tape. To do this, simply take the puck and brush it against the tape, leaving black markings. This is where Bedard gets creative. He does not have a specific way of marking up his stick, so have fun with the design. The main point here is that you want to press the tape down with the puck so the tape does not come off of the blade.
And this is it. The tape job for Connor Bedard. Go score some goals.
