NHL Tape Jobs
Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like David Pastrnak
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as one of the best goal scorers in the NHL, David Pastrnak!
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. The hockey stick we use in the video is the Pro Blackout Extra lite stick from hockeystickman.com with the P28 curve. It is similar to the toe curve used by Pasta, but not exactly the same.
The second thing we need is some 1-and-a-half-inch Black hockey cloth tape. In the video, we went with the Renfrow brand as I have found that it does not leave that annoying residue that some other cloth tapes leave on the stick blade.
The last thing we need are scissors to trim up the tape on the toe or to use to cut the tape if you are having trouble ripping it.
Before you put this together, here are the key components of his tape job:
Start near the toe of the blade and end at the middle portion of the blade.
He uses black 1 and a half inch tape and begins taping on the front side of the stick.
Leave about half inch to three quarters of an inch between passes, resulting in what we call the ‘candy cane’ look.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like David Pastrnak
Find the toe of the blade and starting on the forehand side, place the tape flush with the top of the blade and tape straight down the front. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completly covering the starting point.
Pull the tape in the direction of the heel of the blade, at an angle on the forehand side, overlapping with a minimal amount of the tape from the first pass.
Go back up the backhand side and angle the tape to leave a gap between the first pass and the current pass. This is where Pasta’s unique tape job begins to take on the ‘candy-cane’ look. There should be a gap between half an inch and three quarters of an inch between the first pass and the second pass.
Continue down the front side 2 more times. In the end, there should be 4 passes on the front hand side, ending up about half way down the blade, or even a bit closer to the heel than the middle.
After the fourth pass on the forehand side, the last part of the tape job is to go straight up the backhand side, then rip the tape flush with the top of the blade.
And that is it! Now that you have a Candy Cane tape job just like David Pastrnak on your paddle, go score some goals!
