Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like Nikita Kucherov
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as two-time Stanley Cup champion, Nikita Kucherov.
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. The hockey stick we use in the video is Pro-Blackout Extra Lite stick from hockeystickman.com with the P28 curve. It is similar to the toe curve used by Nikita Kucherov, but not exactly the same, as he uses the P28 Custom Kucherov curve.
The second thing we need is some 1-inch white hockey cloth tape. In the video, we went with the Howie’s hockey tape, which I received as a free gift when purchasing some gloves from ProStockHockey.com.
The third thing we need is a pair of scissors to cut the tape in case the tape is being unruly.
Lastly, he adds wax to the tape.
Before you put this together, here are the key components of his tape job:
He starts by going toe to heel, rather than heel to toe, where heel to toe tends to be the standard across the hockey world.
He uses white 1 inch, white cloth tape and tapes the entire blade, going a bit past the heel.
He adds a bit of wax to give the tape a bit more grip and repel some of the ice or water from building up on the tape.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like Nikita Kucherov
Starting on the forehand side at the toe, we will begin at the top of the blade and wrap the tape straight down the forehand side of the toe, leaving some tape overhanging the edge of the toe. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completely covering the starting point.
Going back to the front, bring the tape down at an angle to begin taping towards the heel. Naturally, with the P28 curve, you will need to press down some of the excess tape near the toe to be cut later.
As you make your way to the heel, the overlap of the tape should be about one fourth of the one in tape overlapping. Continue to do this until you get to the heel. Kucherov tapes the entire blade and will actually tape a little bit passed the actual heel.
When the blade is on the last pass on the backhand, make sure to pull the tape back across to align with the top of the last pass or a bit before the last pass on the backhand. Then rip or cut the tape directly on top.
Going back to the toe, if there is any tape that is hanging off the toe area, take your scissors and trim that bit off.
And that is it! Now that you have the Nikita Kucherov tape job on your paddle, go score some goals!
