NHL Tape Jobs
Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like Patrick Kane
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as 3-time Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Kane!
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. The hockey stick we use in the video is the hockeystickman.com pro custom stick with a blade pattern that is similar to the one Patrick Kane uses. Link in the description below. You can use this method for any blade pattern.
The second thing we need is some 1-and-a-half-inch white hockey cloth tape. In the video, we went with the Renfrow brand as I have found that it does not leave that annoying residue that some other cloth tapes leave on the stick blade.
The third thing we need are a pair of scissors to trim up the tape on the toe or to use to cut the tape if you are having trouble ripping it.
Lastly, we need a puck to mark up the tape.
Before you put this together, here are the key components of his tape job:
Start by going toe to heel, rather than heel to toe, where heel to toe tends to be the standard across the hockey world.
He uses white 1 and a half inch tape and tapes nearly the entire blade.
He uses a puck to help mark up the white tape.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like Patrick Kane
Starting on the backhand side of the toe, we will begin with a bit of an overlap and wrap the tape straight down on the toe, nearly flush with the edge, but not quite. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completly covering the starting point.
Going back to the front, bring the tape down at an angle to begin taping towards the heel. The overlap of the tape should be minimal. Continue to do this until you get to the heel.
When the blade is on the last pass on the backhand, make sure to pull the tape back across to align with the top of the last padd on the backhand. Then rip or cut the tape directly on top.
Going back to the toe, if there is any tape that is hanging off the toe area, take your scissors and trim that bit off.
The final step is to mark up the tape. To do this, simply take the puck and brush it against the tape, leaving black markings. Start by brushing the puck top to bottom near the heel – as opposed to the rest of the blade which is more of a heel to toe brushing motion. This is so that the tape near the heel does not roll up on you. This should be done on both the forehand and backhand side of the stick, as well as the top of the blade.
And that is it! Now that you have the Patrick Kane tape job on your paddle, go practice your stickhandling!
