NHL Tape Jobs
Tape Your Hockey Stick Blade Like Trevor Zegras
We are going to review how you can tape your hockey stick blade using the same method as one of the most innovative players in the NHL, Trevor Zegras.
Materials Needed
The first thing needed is the hockey stick. The hockey stick we use in the video is the CCM Jetspeed with the P92 curve, where the P92 curve is the same hockey stick curve used by Trevor Zegras.
The second thing we need is some 1-and-a-half-inch white hockey cloth tape. In the video, we went with the Renfrow brand as I have found that it does not leave that annoying residue that some other cloth tapes leave on the stick blade.
The third thing we need are scissors to trim up the tape on the toe or to use to cut the tape if you are having trouble ripping it.
Lastly, he adds wax to the tape.
Before you put this together, here are the key components of his tape job:
Starts by going toe to heel, rather than heel to toe, where heel to toe tends to be the standard across the hockey world.
He uses 1 and a half inch white hockey tape and begins taping on the front side of the stick.
Add a bit of wax to give the tape a bit more grip and repel some of the ice or water from building up on the tape.
Steps to tape your hockey stick like Trevor Zegras
Starting on the forehand side of the toe, we will begin at the top of the blade and pull the tape straight down on the toe, nearly flush with the edge, but not quite. With the P92 curve, this will leave a bit of tape that will need to be cut later. Continuing up the backhand side of the blade, the tape should be straight up the backhand, completly covering the starting point.
Going back to the front, bring the tape down at an angle to begin taping towards the heel. The overlap of the tape should be about a quarter inch or less. Continue to do this until you get to the heel.
When the blade is on the last pass on the backhand, make sure to pull the tape back across to align with the top of the last padd on the backhand. Then rip or cut the tape directly on top.
Going back to the toe, remember to trim the tape that is hanging off the toe area, so, take your scissors and cut that bit off.
Add some wax. Here, we will take some of this [insert wax name] wax and put a light coating on the tape. I would recommend not going crazy with the wax as too much will make the blade too grippy and possibly hurt key parts of your game like passing or stickhandling.
And that is it! Now that you have the Trevor Zegras tape job, go score some highlight reel goals!
