Bauer Concept 3 Full Face Shield Review
Cage vs. Fishbowl — 6 Months With the Bauer Concept 3 in a Hot & Humid Climate
Six months with the Bauer Concept 3 fishbowl. The switch from cage to full face shield has some real advantages — but also one massive dealbreaker depending on where you live. Here's the full breakdown and the final verdict on whether it's worth making the switch.
Pros & Cons
✅ Pros
- Extremely sturdy. Multiple pucks to the shield — not a single scratch, dent, or crack. Zero concerns about protection when switching from a cage.
- Easy to clean. No issues scratching the shield during cleaning. A regular towel or microfiber cloth works without risk of damage.
- Slightly clearer vision vs. a cage. Fewer visual obstructions compared to a wire cage, when the shield isn't fogged up (more on that below).
❌ Cons
- Minor: Hot and loud inside the fishbowl. Less ventilation than a cage, and sound bounces around in there. Not a big deal for most, but noticeable.
- Major — Climate Dependent: The anti-fog technology simply does not work in hot and humid climates. Tried anti-fog sprays, Windex, liquid soap, the Lysol method — results were inconsistent at best. Living in the southern U.S. where it's hot and humid for 8+ months of the year, nothing reliably prevented fogging. During the 4 cooler months, the Bauer Concept 3 worked great with little to no fog issues.
Final Verdict
After 6 months: went back to a cage. If I moved back north, this would be an easy switch back to the fishbowl. The fogging issue in southern heat wiped out every benefit the Concept 3 offered.
Final Grade:
☀️ Hot & Humid Climate: C- — Fog on the mask can seriously hurt your vision on the ice. That's a major safety and performance issue.
❄️ Cool/Northern Climate: A — Loses a fraction from an A+ only because of the heat and noise relative to a cage, which some players may find annoying. Otherwise, a great piece of equipment.
