How to Tape Your Hockey Stick Like Alexander Ovechkin

The Greatest Goal Scorer of All Time — 1.5" White Tape, Middle of Blade to Toe

The greatest goal scorer in NHL history has one of the most recognized tape jobs in the game. Here's how to put Ovi's tape job on your blade.

Materials Needed

  • Tape: 1.5-inch white hockey cloth tape (Renfrow brand recommended)
  • Scissors (for trimming toe)
  • Hockey puck (to mark up the tape)

Key Components of Alexander Ovechkin's Tape Job

  1. Start near the middle of the blade and tape toward the toe.
  2. White 1.5-inch tape covering the entire toe.
  3. Uses a puck to mark up the white tape after applying.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find the middle of the blade. Starting on the backhand side, place the tape about one inch from the top and wrap straight down the front. Coming back up the backhand, completely cover the starting point.
  2. Pull the tape at an angle on the forehand side, covering about one-third of the first strip.
  3. Continue back up the backhand side, leaving about one-eighth to one-quarter inch of the previous pass exposed. Continue until you reach where the toe begins to taper.
  4. Near the toe, unroll excess tape (more than you need) to make covering the toe easier. Finish the toe completely and press all edges down tight.
  5. Trim excess tape around the toe with scissors.
  6. Mark up the tape with a puck: use the edge of the puck, going top-to-bottom on the last piece at the toe, then heel-to-toe on the rest of the blade. Both forehand, backhand, and the top of the blade.

Ovi tape job complete. Go practice some one-timers.
