How to Tape Your Hockey Stick Like Connor Bedard

2023 NHL #1 Overall Draft Pick — 1" White Tape, Toe to Heel with Puck Markings

Connor Bedard is the most hyped prospect in years, and his tape job is intentionally erratic — the lines aren't always straight and the style changes. Here's the 'sock method' version.

Materials Needed

  • Hockey stick: CCM Jetspeed with P29 (P92) curve
  • Tape: 1-inch white hockey cloth tape
  • Scissors (for trimming toe)
  • Hockey puck (to mark up the tape — Bedard's signature step)

Key Components of Connor Bedard's Tape Job

  1. Starts at the toe and tapes toward the heel (toe-to-heel).
  2. White 1-inch tape, nearly the full blade, leaving a bit of toe exposed.
  3. Uses a puck to mark up the tape in his own creative way — the design changes, it's not perfect, and that's the point.
  4. The tape job changes often; Bedard himself admits he's not a great stick taper.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Starting on the backhand side of the toe, begin with a slight overlap and wrap straight down the toe, nearly flush with the edge. Up the backhand, completely cover the starting point.
  2. Back to the front — bring the tape down at an angle toward the heel. Overlap doesn't have to be perfect. Bedard's tape job tends to be slightly erratic in its lines. Continue to the heel (or almost there, leaving a bit of toe exposed).
  3. Rip or cut the tape. Trim any overhanging tape at the toe with scissors.
  4. Mark up the tape with a puck by brushing it against the tape, leaving black marks. Bedard doesn't have a set pattern — have fun with it. The main purpose is to press the tape down so it sticks to the blade.

Bedard tape job done. Go score some goals — no hotdogs required, but strongly recommended.
