How to Tape Your Hockey Stick Like David Pastrnak
The Candy Cane — 1.5" Black Tape, Toe with Gaps Between Passes
Pasta has one of the most distinctive tape jobs in hockey — the candy cane. Black tape, starting near the toe, with visible gaps between passes. Here's how to do it.
Materials Needed
- Hockey stick: Pro Blackout Extra Lite with P28 curve from HockeyStickMan.com (similar to Pastrnak's setup)
- Tape: 1.5-inch black hockey cloth tape (Renfrow brand recommended)
- Scissors (for trimming)
Key Components of David Pastrnak's Tape Job
- Start near the toe of the blade and end about halfway down (mid-blade area).
- Begins on the forehand side using black 1.5-inch tape.
- Leave half to three-quarters of an inch between passes — this creates the signature "candy cane" look.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- At the toe, starting on the forehand side, place the tape flush with the top of the blade and pull straight down the front. Come back up the backhand side, completely covering the starting point.
- Pull the tape toward the heel at an angle on the forehand, overlapping just minimally with the first pass.
- Back up the backhand side — leave a gap of half to three-quarters of an inch between the first and second passes. This is where the candy cane pattern starts taking shape.
- Repeat down the forehand two more times. In total, there should be 4 passes on the forehand side, ending about halfway down the blade (or slightly toward the heel).
- After the fourth forehand pass, go straight up the backhand side and rip the tape flush with the top of the blade.
Candy cane tape job complete. Go score some goals.
