How to Tape Your Hockey Stick Like Nikita Kucherov
2x Stanley Cup Champion — 1" White Tape, Toe to Heel (Past the Heel) with Wax
Kucherov tapes the entire blade — and then some, going slightly past the heel. Two-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the best pure scorers alive.
Materials Needed
- Hockey stick: Pro-Blackout Extra Lite from HockeyStickMan.com with P28 curve (Kucherov uses a P28 Custom)
- Tape: 1-inch white hockey cloth tape (Howie's hockey tape)
- Scissors (for trimming toe)
- Hockey wax
Key Components of Nikita Kucherov's Tape Job
- Starts at the toe and tapes toward (and slightly past) the heel.
- White 1-inch tape, full blade covered with about one-quarter overlap.
- Adds wax to finish.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Starting at the forehand side of the toe, place the tape at the top of the blade and wrap straight down the forehand, leaving a small overhang at the edge of the toe. Come up the backhand completely covering the start.
- Back to the front — bring the tape down at an angle toward the heel. With the P28 curve, press down excess tape near the toe for later trimming.
- Keep overlap to about one-quarter of the 1-inch tape width as you work toward the heel. Kucherov tapes the entire blade and goes slightly past the actual heel.
- On the last backhand pass, pull tape back to align with the top of the previous pass. Rip or cut at the top.
- Trim any tape at the toe with scissors.
- Apply a light coat of wax.
Kucherov tape job done. Go score some goals.
