How to Tape Your Hockey Stick Like Patrick Kane
3x Stanley Cup Champion — 1.5" White Tape, Toe to Heel with Puck Markings
Three-time Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Kane is one of the best stickhandlers in NHL history. Here's how to put his tape job on your blade.
Materials Needed
- Hockey stick: Pro custom stick from HockeyStickMan.com with a Kane-style blade pattern
- Tape: 1.5-inch white hockey cloth tape (Renfrow brand recommended)
- Scissors (for trimming toe)
- Hockey puck (to mark up the tape)
Key Components of Patrick Kane's Tape Job
- Start at the toe and tape toward the heel (toe-to-heel — opposite of the standard).
- White 1.5-inch tape covering nearly the entire blade, minimal overlap.
- Uses a puck to mark up the tape after applying.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Starting on the backhand side of the toe, begin with a slight overlap and wrap straight down the toe, nearly flush with the edge. Up the backhand, completely cover the starting point.
- Back to the front — bring the tape down at an angle toward the heel. Keep overlap minimal. Continue to the heel.
- On the last pass at the backhand, pull tape back to align with the top of the last pass. Rip or cut at the top.
- Trim any tape hanging off the toe with scissors.
- Mark up the tape with a puck: near the heel, brush top-to-bottom (not heel-to-toe) so the tape doesn't roll. For the rest of the blade, brush heel-to-toe. Cover both forehand, backhand, and the top of the blade.
Kane tape job done. Go work on your stickhandling.
